The King and I

 

 

It's been a while since I can say

I've relaxed

since we sat out on your porch swing 

we talked about the time 

and for the first time we could laugh 

without feeling something caught 

on the definition maybe

that we both have had stuck spinning in our heads

for so long now

for so long 

 

You are always the king of 

incredible consequence

so determined now to show your strength 

except when challenged by 

the all apposing optimist 

but I guess that was always you and I 

when I think back 

I think that we

never could have known

we never could have seen

 

what a way to go down now

hitting the ground

and watching the birds above you 

circle around 

having your pretty red carpet 

pulled from underneath 

so did you take enough time off of sleep 

to watch the waves of the ocean

diagram your life

translating everything I said 

into what you want to hear 

afraid that all this time

maybe I was right 

maybe I was right
